St Lucia, the leading tourist island with the highest number of all-inclusive hotels, covers 260 sq miles and has a population of 140,000. Like St Vincent, it gained its independence in 1979. St Lucia is the largest banana exporter of the four Windward Islands and the crop directly benefits almost half the island's population. Of the three Nobel Laureates produced by the English-speaking Caribbean, two of them, Sir Arthur Lewis (Economics) and Derrick Walcott (Literature) were born and received their early education in St Lucia.
